Ballantyne's Busiest Fall Week Starts at a Grocery Store

Wegmans opens its first Charlotte store in Ballantyne on Wednesday, Oct. 14, at 9 a.m. On Friday and Saturday of that same week, the TD Amp Ballantyne plays the last two concerts on its current calendar. After that, the campus works on a different clock. The draw changes from evening shows on the lawn to things people do through the week: grocery runs, dinners, a pop-up market and an ice rink. The middle of October is when that change happens, and all of it falls within about half a mile.

A Season That Ends in Pieces

Summer at Ballantyne was built around the Amp. The venue opened with Stream Park in September 2023. In April 2026, Northwood announced its new name, TD Amp Ballantyne. It is an independently operated venue that holds 5,000 people.

The community series ended first. Ballantyne Beats ran five local shows from April through September. The last one was The Broken Hearts, a Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers tribute, on Sept. 11. The ticketed calendar has three October dates left:

  • Thursday, Oct. 8: Clint Black & Midland. Doors at 5 p.m., show at 6 p.m.
  • Friday, Oct. 16: Feeling 22: A Tribute to Taylor Swift, at 7 p.m., with Queens of Country as special guests. The event page lists free admission.
  • Saturday, Oct. 17: Trampled by Turtles with special guest Futurebirds. Doors at 5 p.m., show at 6:30 p.m.

The TD Amp calendar shows no concerts after Oct. 17. The next listing is an ice rink event in November. The venue can add shows at any time, so check the calendar before you assume the season is over. As things stand, though, the Trampled by Turtles show is the last scheduled concert of 2026.

Wegmans Arrives Between the Last Two Shows

The new store is at 11550 N. Community House Road. It covers 110,000 square feet and will employ about 450 full- and part-time workers. On Sept. 24, the Charlotte Observer reported that the store sits less than a half-mile from The Bowl at Ballantyne, off Interstate 485 at Exit 61, and has 664 parking spaces.

Wegmans expects a big crowd, and it has a track record to go on. When the chain opened its first North Carolina store in Raleigh in 2019, more than 3,000 customers lined up before the doors opened, and 30,000 shoppers came on the first day, according to the company. CJ Bolorin, a Wegmans merchandising area manager who has opened stores in Brooklyn and Manhattan, told the Observer that Charlotte's reaction has stood out to him.

"When it comes to the Charlotte store, I've never had so many people just stop me and just say, 'We're so excited for Wegmans to be here.'"

Wegmans' asset protection team is working with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department and city transportation officials on opening-week traffic. Officers will be on hand all week to direct traffic around the store. Bolorin said the plan can be adjusted and could run past the first week if needed.

Put the two calendars side by side. Opening week starts Wednesday, Oct. 14. Two days later, the free Feeling 22 show opens the lawn at the Amp, less than half a mile away. The next evening, Trampled by Turtles opens its doors at 5 p.m. If you're running a weekend errand or meeting friends at The Bowl that Friday or Saturday evening, expect the first-week grocery crowd and the season's last concert crowd to arrive around the same hours.

The store also gives the campus a new place to eat. In a May 21 tour of the interior, the Observer described a Market Grill serving pizza, chicken, burgers and steak with table delivery. It connects to a café with 180 indoor seats and 104 on the patio. That's a large new dining room arriving just as the outdoor concerts end. Wegmans has not published regular weekly hours for the Ballantyne store, so confirm hours with the store before planning around an early or late visit.

Ballantyne is only the start. Wegmans has also confirmed a second location in Cornelius as part of a plan for three to five stores across the Charlotte area.

The Bowl Is Full, With Two Doors Still Closed

The Bowl at Ballantyne is the other half of this shift, and the leasing numbers back it up. In an April 2026 Charlotte Business Journal interview republished by Northwood Retail, the developer said the 70,000-square-foot first phase was 100% leased across 19 tenants. Mister O1 Extraordinary Pizza and Culinary Dropout are the final two tenants in that phase. Both are still on their way.

Mister O1 Extraordinary Pizza will be at 14020 Stream Way, Suite 110. It is the brand's first North Carolina restaurant. The Bowl's February announcement set a target of early fall 2026. That announcement listed planned hours of 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. The Bowl's store listing still says "Coming Soon," and the restaurant's own Charlotte page lists delivery and takeout as "Coming Soon."

Culinary Dropout will be at 15220 Bowl St. Queen City News reported in February that the two-story restaurant will have a live-music stage, a rooftop bar and a patio. The announcement said "this fall." As of Oct. 1, the restaurant's Ballantyne page still says "Coming Soon" and gives no date.

The Bowl has seen this kind of delay before. South Block and Brasserie Copain were both first announced for late 2025. South Block opened at 14020 Stream Way, Suite 114, at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 17. It was the açaí and smoothie shop's first Charlotte location. Copain was open by the end of January. A few weeks of slippage is normal for restaurant openings, so "this fall" could also end up meaning early winter. Once they open, Culinary Dropout's stage will give the campus a place for live music indoors, a few blocks from the outdoor lawn that just finished its season.

Northwood has said it is considering two more phases of The Bowl and more retail near TD Amp. It has not named tenants or dates.

What Fills the Calendar After the Lawn Goes Quiet

Apart from Mecktoberfest the week before the final shows, the events on the calendar lean toward fire pits, food and skating. This is what's listed now:

Date Event Where Details
Oct. 9 to 11 Mecktoberfest at OMB Olde Mecklenburg Brewery, The Bowl Three-day Oktoberfest weekend
Sat., Oct. 24 Whiskey, Wine & Fire Festival Ballantyne's Backyard 4 to 9 p.m., $39 to $75, fire gardens and fire-kissed BBQ
Sat., Nov. 7 Bowl Street Pop-Up Market The Bowl Free
Nov. 21 to Jan. 10 Ice Skating at The Bowl The Bowl Outdoor rink
November to December, dates TBD Carolina Holiday Light Spectacular Ballantyne's Backyard Over one million lights and a Winter Wonderland Carnival

The Whiskey, Wine & Fire Festival on Oct. 24 is the first weekend event after the last concert. It is also the last of the Drink. Eat. Relax. food and drink festivals at Ballantyne's Backyard with a confirmed 2026 date. The Wine & Food Festival already ran on Sept. 26, and the Beer, Bourbon & BBQ Festival was back in May. The holiday lights show is still listed as TBD, so the ice rink is the most reliable winter plan for now.

One newer spot keeps going on its own schedule. The Ballantyne Community Garden in Memory of Matt Oliver opened at Brixham Park on Earth Day, April 22. All 30 beds were taken for the 2026 growing season, and plots are open to Ballantyne tenants and residents. If you want a bed next year, ask the garden early, since this year's spots filled quickly.

Planning Around the Week of Oct. 14

The practical advice comes down to dates. If you want to see Wegmans in its first days without the crowds, go on a weekday morning after Oct. 14 and before the Friday show, when traffic officers are still on hand and the Amp is quiet. If you're going to Feeling 22 on Oct. 16 or Trampled by Turtles on Oct. 17, leave extra time for parking and for the roads off Exit 61, because both shows fall in Wegmans' first week. For dinner on The Bowl, check the Mister O1 and Culinary Dropout pages before you go, since both still said "Coming Soon" on Oct. 1.

Big openings like these change how a neighborhood's weeks feel, and buyers and sellers pick up on that quickly.
